I heard that they were making a Joker film as early as the year 2018 when production began in early September 2018. I was curious, Joker is easily one of the most layered DCuniverse villains with a backstory as flexible as the elongated man's nose. Yes, he fell into a vat of Acid but what made him become the clown Prince of crime? No one knows because as a character Joker constantly lies. He lies for the sake of it, He lies because he can, He lies because it's fun.
We have known him for years as Batman's arch-nemesis and the guy who did a number on Dr. Harleen Quizel but who was he before the Clown make up? Who is he under that plastered smile? Todd Phillips delivers a version of Joker we have never seen before.
In this narrative, Joker is Arthur Fleck, a failing comedian suffering from a mental disorder that makes him laugh at the most inopportune times. He has no control over his laughter nor does he have control as to how long he will be laughing. There is a particular scene where Joaquin Phoenix is sitting in a half cast room, laughing uncontrollably. You can see that the laughter is causing him pain but he really can't stop but continue, he's suffering.
Then add on how the world shuns those who are mentally ill and watch as you can't wait for him to become the Joker so every bastard on screen can get what's coming to him. It's a coming of age story, a picturesque view of the rising phoenix that is in Arthur and when that scene finally comes, it is satisfying!
The cinematography is beautiful but it's very much a character-driven film. No matter what he is doing, our eyes are on Arthur and Joaquin is one of the best darn actors we have to date. It's one for the ages and a complete Masterpiece, I hope it wins many many awards.
